John M. Broaddus

Professor emeritus of history and UTEP alumnus John M. Broaddus Jr. has died. Broaddus earned his bachelor's degree in 1951 and his master's degree in 1955 both in history from Texas Western College (now UTEP). Broaddus received an athletic scholarship for football from the college. He lettered as a guard and linebacker and played with the Texas Western Sun Bowl Championship team in 1950. He became a member of the History Department at Texas Western College in 1954 where he taught government and various American and Southwest history courses until he retired in 1991.

Sophie Rigollet Stewart

Sophie Rigollet Stewart has been named Development Writer for Research and Advancement Communications in the Office of University Development. Stewart graduated cum laude from Arizona State University with a bachelor's degree in Finance and a second bachelor's in French. Prior to joining UTEP, Stewart worked at ASU as the senior coordinator for special projects in the Office of the President and as a Strategic Relations Associate in ASU’s Office of Pan American Initiatives.

Former UTEP police chief and 1969 alumnus, William E. Rodriguez, has died. Rodriguez earned his bachelor's degree in business from UTEP. Rodriguez served as El Paso's first Mexican American Chief of Police from 1977 to 1986. He was named chief of UTEP's Police Department in 1989 and retired in 1999. (no image available)

Retired UTEP staff member, Fabian Guardado, has died. Guardado retired from Facility Services in 1992 after 13 years as a building attendant. (no image available)

UTEP faculty member, Jackie Spradley, has died. Spradley joined the UTEP family in 1998 as a lecturer in developmental English. During his years at UTEP, Spradley received the 2006 Outstanding Advocate for Entering Students Award and was the co-advisory for UTEP’s nationally recognized chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. Loretta Hernandez has been named Senior Development Researcher in Foundation Relations. The El Paso native received her Bachelors of Science in Clinical Laboratory Science at UTEP and her Masters in Public Health through the UTEP-UT Houston collaborative program. Prior to joining UTEP, Hernandez worked as the research and data manager in the Division of Infectious Disease and the Center for Emerging Pathogens at the University of Dentistry and Medicine in New Jersey. Sept. 1, 2008

Darla Smith, Ph.D., has been named Chair of the Department of Kinesiology. She previous served as Associate Dean of the College of Health Sciences. Since joining UTEP in 1996, Smith has also served as assistant professor, associate professor and interim chair of the department. She currently holds the key position of UTEP Faculty Athletic Representative to the NCAA and Conference-USA.

Sept. 1, 2008

Former UTEP faculty member, Susan Thompson Funk, has died. Funk worked as a lecturer in the Department of Teacher Education at UTEP. She received her bachelor’s degree in 1963 from Texas Western College and her master’s degree in education in 1973 from UTEP. (no image available)
