Hughes S. Butterworth Jr.
(B.S. ’54), UTEP’s 1993 Distinguished Alumnus, was inducted into the Junior Achievement of the Desert  Southwest Inc.’s 2007 Business Hall of Fame in October. Butterworth is chief executive officer of LandAmerica Lawyers Title of El Paso.

Denwood F. “Denny” Ross Jr. (B.S.C.E. ’53) received the American Nuclear Society’s 2007 Reactor Technology Award posthumously in November.

John C. Ross Jr. (B.B.A. ’56) has completed six years of service on the Collin County [Texas] Tax Appraisal Review Board, of which he was vice chairman. He resides in Allen, Texas.


Francis S. “Frank” Hoy (B.B.A. ’67) was inducted in October into the Junior Achievement of the Desert Southwest Inc.’s 2007 Business Hall of Fame. Hoy is director of UTEP’s Centers for Entrepreneurial Development, Advancement, Research and Support, and he holds the Chair for the Study of Trade in the Americas.

Joe H. Smith (B.S. ’66) has relocated his business, Petrophysics Inc., from Houston to San Antonio. Smith will exhibit his collection of early 20th century Santa Fe Pueblo pottery on the San Antonio edition of Antiques Roadshow in spring 2008.

Ramona Sosa (B.A. ’64) retired from her post of associate dean of Milwaukee [Wisc.] Area Technical College and has returned to El Paso.

Patrick L. “Pat” Thompson (B.A. ’65) is the communications manager at the Monticello [Minn.] Nuclear Generating Plant. Thompson, who also is the new president of the 24-team North Star Senior Baseball League, resides in Minnetonka, Minn.


Gregory K. Allen (B.A. ’75) was named interim chief of the El Paso Police Department in December.

Jose F. “Joe” Cardenas (B.S.C.E. ’74) is president of El Paso engineering firm Moreno Cardenas Inc. Texas Construction magazine ranked the company among the Top 100 Design Firms in Texas for 2007. The firm is ranked 77th overall and is the third-largest Hispanic-owned firm on the list.

Azucena Dominguez (M.A. ’77) retired in 2007 after a 36-year career teaching mathematics in the Gadsden and Ysleta independent school districts. She resides in El Paso.

Robert I. Giron (B.A. ’73) is founder and proprietor of Gival Press LLC, an award-winning independent publishing house based in Arlington, Va.

Wayne P. Grinnell (B.A. ’73), vice president of CSA Design Group of El Paso, is a member of the Counselors of Real Estate, the international association of real estate advisors. He is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners.

Judge Miguel “Mike” Herrera (B.A. ’75), who presides over the 383rd State District Court in El Paso, graduated from the Texas College of Judicial Studies in April 2007.

Miguel A. “Mike” Loya Jr. (B.S.M.E. ’77) is the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s 2007 Hispanic Male Senior Executive of the Year. Loya, who received UTEP’s 2004 College of Engineering Gold Nugget Award, heads Vitol Inc., an oil trading, marketing and logistics company in Houston.

Judge Joe E. Smith V (M.A. ’71) is an associate district court judge for the Fifth Judicial District of Iowa in Des Moines, where he resides.

Robert V. “Bob” Wingo (B.B.A. ’73), UTEP’s 2002 College of Business Administration Gold Nugget Award recipient, was named to Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s new Competitiveness Council. Wingo also is a member of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and president of El Paso-based advertising agency Sanders\Wingo.


Karen R. Damron (B.S.N. ’83) is assistant professor of nursing at Pikeville College, Pikeville, Ky., where she resides.

David C. Galatzan (B.S. ’80) is an advertising graphics and design instructor at El Paso Community College.

Janet Lekowski Roberts (B.A. ’80; M.Ed. ’85) is an ESL specialist/coach for the Fort Bend Independent School District in Sugar Land, Texas.

Chris M. Mendoza (B.S.Ed. ’86) is director of multicultural marketing for MassMutual Financial Group in Springfield, Mass. Mendoza resides in Wilbraham, Mass.

Bruce W. Monk (B.B.A. ’85) is director of finance for the American Society of Association Executives and the Center for Association Leadership in Washington, D.C. Monk lives in Woodbridge, Va.

John D. “Danny” Olivas (B.S.M.E. ’89), a NASA astronaut, was honored in a Congressional Statement given by Congressman Silvestre Reyes before the House of Representatives in June 2007. Olivas, a resident of Houston, received UTEP’s 2006 Distinguished Alumni Award.

David C. Roberts (M.S. ’89), of Sugar Land, Texas, is a supervisor with the Texas Department of Transportation in Houston.

Beth A. Shook (B.F.A. ’85) is a ceramic artist living in Gilbert, Ariz. Her work is featured in the exhibition, Table Manners, at the Arizona Museum of Youth March 29 through Sept. 10. The Shemer Art Center and Museum in Phoenix will host a solo exhibition of her art Sept. 16 through Oct. 15.

Pamela L. Thompson (B.S.Ed. ’87), of El Paso, was one of only two Texas librarians awarded a scholarship to attend the American Association of School Librarians Conference in Reno, Nev. Thompson is a library media specialist at Col. John O. Ensor Middle School.

Sandra B. Vasquez (B.B.A. ’87) was appointed assistant vice president for equal opportunity and compliance services at UTEP in January.


Martin F. Armendariz (B.A. ’95) is a realtor associate with Stanton Realty in El Paso.

Rosanna V. Armendariz (B.A. ’97; M.F.A. ’05) is an author of poetry, flash fiction and short stories. Her short fiction story was selected for the forthcoming GirlChild Press anthology “Just Like a Girl: A Manifesta!”

Francisco Miguel Zermeño Durán (B.B.A. ’95) is corporate vice treasurer of Mexican real estate development company Grupo Ruba. Durán lives in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.

Lt. Cmdr. George R. Murga (B.I.S. ’96), of Chula Vista, Calif., serves as a department head and tactical actions officer on the Navy’s USS Bonhomme Richard, which recently returned from the Persian Gulf where it supported operations in Iraq.


Benedict L. Ekal (M.S. ’07) represented UTEP at the Power 100 Summit in Washington, D.C., in January. The summit convened students and experts to explore new ways to combat disease and poverty worldwide. 

Fausto Fernandez (B.F.A. ’01) is an exhibition specialist at the Arizona State University Art Museum in Tempe. His paintings have recently been exhibited at the Tucson Museum of Art’s Arizona Biennial ’07; at the Latin American Art Gallery in Scottsdale, Ariz.; at the Modified Arts gallery in Phoenix; and at the Brooks Barrows gallery in Milwaukee. Three of his paintings are included in the group show Remix: New Modernities in a Post-Indian World, which will travel to the Smithsonian’s Museum of the American Indian in New York City in May 2008.

Brian J. Klaes (B.S.C.E. ’00) is the El Paso Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers’ 2007 Outstanding Young Engineer of the Year. Klaes is a corporate associate and project manager with Moreno Cardenas Inc. Consulting Engineers in El Paso.

Susan “Susie” Quintana (B.B.A. ’04) is an Anna Sobol Levy Fellow at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Robert A. Soto (B.M. ’05) graduated cum laude from Yale University in May 2007 with a master of music degree. Soto is a freelance artist and educator. He resides in El Paso, where he plays with Fuego Latino Salsa, Fungi Mungle and the Ascension Brass Quintet.
