Career Corner

November 2009

Well, it's fall and the campus is booming with lots of activity. Unfortunately, we have some UTEP graduates out there who don't see the kind of activity in the job market that they would like. The economy is down and unemployment is up. Sometimes it's hard to know where to turn. Isn't anyone hiring?

Actually, Uncle Sam is looking for thousands of good men and women. The Federal Government is hiring, as are many others in the public sector. Of course, those who are searching for employment often must be prepared to go where the jobs are.

The University Career Center at UTEP, in collaboration with New Mexico State University, is hosting the Borderlands Public Service Career Showcase this month. Employers representing federal, state, municipal government, and non-profit agencies will be visiting both campuses. Visit our web site to see who has registered thus far, and remember that we are expecting more; registration is not yet closed.

Take some time to come to the UTEP Union on November 19th and/or NMSU's Corbett Center Student Union on November 17th; the event should offer lots of exciting opportunities for folks from all academic disciplines. You also might want to take advantage of two new workshops that are being offered by the University Career Center, “Mastering the Federal Application Process” and “Opportunities in the Federal Government.” Check our schedule of events in Job Mine or contact the University Career Center for more information.

Don't forget that members of the Alumni Association are eligible to use all of the services available through the University Career Center – free of charge! Check out our web site at www.utep.edu/careers, and don't forget that we're here to answer any questions you may have; send them to us at Careers@utep.edu. We'd like to hear from you.
