The El Paso Interpreters and Translators Association (EPITA) cordially invites you to attend the 14th annual translation and interpretation workshop, “New Tools for Old and New Challenges”. The workshop will be held at the Tomás Rivera Conference Center at The University of Texas at El Paso on April 18, 2009.
EPITA is a nonprofit professional association that promotes ongoing education and development for translators and interpreters, and supports accreditation and certification programs. The Association encourages the study of translation and interpretation through its annual workshop, which is open to current practitioners or anyone interested in the professions, regardless of discipline. While the workshop does not, per se, certifies anyone as a translator or interpreter, it helps current ATA accredited translators obtain 10 Continuous Education Points and NM State Certified Court Interpreters comply with the state's Contiunous Education Policy.
"*Topics will include: consecutive interpreting, in which one person finishes speaking before the interpretation is given; indigenous languages in Mexico; basic translating techniques from English into Spanish; and changes in the Mexican criminal justice system and accompanying terminology."
This year’s presenters include Dr. Maria Barros, a Senior Reviser and Terminologist from the United Nations Headquarters in New York City; Mr. Rafael Carrillo, a staff interpreter at U.S. District Court in Las Cruces, New Mexico; Ms. Sandra Caldwell, a translator and interpreter from Las Cruces, currently employed at PRODERECHO, a government program in Mexico City; and Mr. Jorge Dieppa, a staff court interpreter at the El Paso Federal Courts and a Lecturer at UTEP’s Language and Linguistics Department where he has taught interpretation since 1989.
The 14th annual workshop promises to be a diverse conference with lectures and a practical exercise in a break-away session. EPITA’s workshop will be held in one of the world’s largest binational, bicultural and bilingual metropolitan areas, El Paso – Ciudad Juárez, an ideal location for the dissemination of intercultural communication. Workshop participants will benefit from educators and professionals from our area, the nation, and Mexico.
