UTEP, Nation Honors Trailblazing Journalist

U.S. Postal Service Unveils Stamp Commemorating UTEP Alumnus

Credited with giving a voice to Hispanic Americans during the 1960s, University of Texas at El Paso alumnus Ruben Salazar will be honored on a U.S. postage stamp this month as part of the American Journalists Series.

Killed on the job while covering the National Chicano Moratorium March in East Los Angeles in 1970 at the age of 42, Salazar is most recognized for his award-winning articles on the lives of the Los Angeles Hispanic community.

Celebrations across the nation and at UTEP will honor the trailblazing newsman during official unveilings of the stamp series April 22. Others honored in the American Journalists Series are Martha Gellhorn, John Hersey, George Polk and Eric Sevareid, all of whom risked their lives reporting on the most important events of the 20th Century.

The U.S. Postal Service will release 30 million first-class, 42-cent stamps bearing Salazar’s name and image. He’ll become the first Hispanic journalist and first UTEP graduate to be commemorated on a U.S. postage stamp – an honor that serves as testament to the achievements of UTEP alumni who are increasingly becoming the image of success across the nation.
