Teaching StudentsDear Colleagues:

As the end of another academic year approaches, UTEP faculty and staff have much to celebrate. Because of our shared commitment to provide access to excellence, coupled with your individual contributions of time, talent and energy, UTEP has emerged as one of the nation’s leaders in meeting the academic needs of historically underrepresented students.

UTEP experienced a record enrollment of nearly 21,011 talented students this year. As our enrollment continues to grow, fulfilling UTEP’s scholarship commitment remains one of our most critical priorities. Since 2003, UTEP’s four-year scholarship need has increased by more than 40 percent! Unfortunately, the resources provided by the State of Texas have not grown to accommodate the needs of our students.

Every eligible student deserves the opportunity to fulfill their greatest ambitions through a higher education, yet, fewer than half of the applicants receive the scholarships for which they qualify academically. In the College of Engineering alone, 508 students met the academic requirements necessary to receive a scholarship in fall 2006; however, due to limited funds, only 188 of those students were awarded!

This year, to address the increase in scholarship need, we are asking every member of the UTEP family to join us in supporting the students we serve by contributing to the UTEP Family Campaign. Your gift to the University General Scholarship, the Miner Athletic Club or scholarships benefiting students in your college or department ensures increased opportunities and enriches the academic experience of every UTEP Miner!

For your convenience, you may also make your contribution through payroll deduction. Additionally, annual gifts of $1,200 or more, made through the Family Campaign, qualify you for membership into the President’s Associates. To learn more about joining this prestigious recognition society visit www.presidentsassociates.utep.edu

Thank you for your commitment. Remember, every gift makes a difference!
